Personal Data Protection Act
The Department of Personal Data Protection (JPDP) is an agency under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM), established on 16 May 2011 after Parliament passed the bill relating to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (APDP), Act 709.
The Department’s main responsibility is to regulate the processing of individuals’ personal data in commercial transactions by Data Users, to prevent misuse or abuse by interested parties.
The APDP provides for the protection of personal data in commercial transactions in Malaysia, to prevent misuse when personal data is stored or processed by individuals and public or private bodies.
In enforcing the APDP, JPDP requires all classes of Personal Data Users, comprising individuals and private bodies except the Government, to register officially to protect the rights of users and the public.
JPDP is headed by a Director General, assisted by a Deputy Director General. It has three main divisions: Registration and Operations, Monitoring, and Legal.
